Oregon NORML Supports Measure 74
Oregon NORML encourages a “yes†vote on this initiative. Oregon NORML, the largest affiliate of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, endorses Ballot Measure 74, the Oregon Regulated Medical Marijuana Supply System Act. Oregon NORML encourages a “yes†vote on this initiative. Measure 74 establishes a regulated system of nonprofit dispensaries to provide better access to medicine for Oregon Medical Marijuana Program participants.
Oregon NORML was neutral on this issue until now. “As a NORML affiliate, our mission is cannabis legalization for all adults,†said Executive Director Madeline Martinez. “Despite our efforts, the Oregon Cannabis Tax Act did not make the ballot. Our next attempt to end cannabis prohibition is at least two years away - a long wait for the vast majority of Oregon’s cannabis consumers.â€
Oregon NORML was reluctant to support Ballot Measure 74 based on unregulated dispensaries in other Western states. “The prices for medical cannabis there would exclude those on fixed incomes. Access to $300.00 ounces equals no access to these patients," states Martinez.
Russ Belville, NORML’s National Outreach Coordinator, provided his analysis of Measure 74. It highlights the differences between Oregon's proposed dispensaries and dispensaries in California and Colorado.
“His analysis addressed our concerns regarding black market pricing. Expert growers report that they can produce quality medicine at a sustainable profit selling to dispensaries for $100 per ounce. When Measure 74 passes, our business projections show that our state regulated nonprofit dispensaries can provide medicine to patients for a maximum of $150 per ounce,†Martinez concludes.

Oregon NORML is proud to announce that our sub-chapter, Salem NORML is sponsoring electronic billboards in five locations throughout the Salem, Oregon area. The last will be located at I-5 and Market Street, which is highly visible. All funding for the signs was raised by the Salem group. There are two ads running now until the November election. Both say "Yes On 74, sponsored by Salem Oregon NORML."

Black market Economy
your analysis is spot on, I think. however, it's STILL a long road that every morally conscientious person must hoe. (obviously, looking at the results from several props from west coast. anyway, good on ya, Now, let's just keep on working for what is the morally correct outcome of these inhumane, unconstitutional "laws" that have been crushing several segments of our society.
hey bro... "modern" liberals?
hey bro... "modern" liberals? uhm, I won't try to draw you into any ideological argument around the facade of our supposed political spectrum, but I can't help asking, this is a new revelation to you? doesn't matter what party, or supposed political affiliation--They're all a bunch of liars, thieves and con-men simply looking out for their own best interest. the only way to change it in my opinion is too radical to elaborate without getting a bunch of flames thrown back at me. BUT... I want to empathize a bit too. I voted for 74 also, (of course), however, didn"T believe it had a snowballs chance. However, we still need to push the door open further. it's too far open to close now anyway, the reality just shows how absurd the current situation truly is. we can force change in the basic structure once we get further on down the socially responsible road. (ie, full on legalization). THE FIGHT IS NOT LOST, ONLY A BATTLE, AND WARS ARE NOT WON OR LOST DUE TO ONE BATTLE'S OUTCOME. So, let's keep up the fight, and break every one of the immoral, unjust laws this criminal govt tries to use in order to force, and keep the ordinary person in bondage!
grower fees
I voted yes but reading that BS pisses me off too $1000 and what a scam when you read it. fuck the assholes that wrote this up and snaked us into it. I hate modern liberals it seems they make it their duty to lie and distort everything good.
Growers fees on fixed income?
I don't want to pay and or have someone else grow for me ever again. I have been loving hiding out here in the woods not having to deal with anyone or having to become a member anywhere just so I can buy or grow my medicine! If I was reading right, $1000+ growers fees? I think not, with my already over taxed and tapped fixed income, I just want to die in peace!
Black Market Economy.
Artificial scarcity produces exorbitant prices. The reality is that with overt, legal cannabiculture the average quality of mass-market cannabis will, almost certainly, increase dramatically and the price will, undoubtedly, decrease by a substantial margin, at least for the mass market grades. Nonetheless, those who can afford to and have already been paying top dollar will still do so for the best of the best. I believe we will eventually see a distribution system much like our wine industry here in Oregon. There will be the, relatively, inexpensive mass market cannabis and there will be the organic, hand-nurtured, high-end varietals for those willing to pay for them. The black market being, ironically, one of the last vestiges of true free enterprise capitalism we will see those who cannot compete fail and those who can thrive.

Black Market Economy
We must find a way to undercut this black market economy in order to legitamize medical use.
Yes on 74
Why is the only direct comment on Measure 74 from Madeline Martinez in this article a criticism? It seems like ORNORML would want to be saying good things about a measure it supports.
pricing
I have been checking prices also with growers lately and most agree that $150 per oz would be available, but as in liquor stores, there will be "top shelf" product that requires a higher fee due to the intensive labor involved. Indoor will also have to be higher priced due to electricity and materials cost. Patients I spoke with from Sacremento were happy paying $60-$70 per 1/4 oz delivered to their home as it was always top quality and a guaranteed weight.
