On Saturday, November 26, 2005, Oregon NORML hosted the 4th Annual Oregon
Medical Cannabis Awards. The awards celebrated the year
in cannabis activism, brought together the finest legal and medical
experts in medical marijuana for an informative educational conference,
and awarded prizes to the best strains of medical marijuana grown
in the state of Oregon.
This
year's big winner was a first-time entrant from the tiny central
Oregon town of Long Creek. David V. was present at the awards banquet
to receive his First Place blue ribbon for Best Overall Strain of
2005. David also received a special eighteen inch functional glass
art sculpture of a Japanese sai sword.
That was only the beginning for David, as he also took home three
more blue ribbons, for High Points in the categories of Taste, Aroma,
and Smoothness, all for his overall winner Strain "Y",
a.k.a. "Dynamite".
David is a caregiver and attended with his wife Wendy, a patient.
The couple was thrilled to win their awards and expressed their surprise
and gratitude for the recognition at this prestigious event. David
promises to keep on growing and will have something special ready
for 2006.
The
other big winner prefers to remain anonymous. We'll call him Mr.
X. His submission was strain "H", a.k.a. "Skunk
#1", and garnered the 2nd Place Overall Award, as well as the
High Points in the categories of Potency and Appearance. The strain
is a hybrid of 25% Afghani (sativa), 25% Acapulco Gold (indica), and
50% Columbian (sativa).
Mr. X received the red ribbon for 2nd Place Overall, and two blue
ribbons for his category awards. He also received a beautiful functional
glass art sculpture of a Japanese koi fish.
Our next finisher, also
remaining anonymous, submitted strain "W", a.k.a. "Old School", which
earned the third place ribbon and a functional glass art sculpture
of a dolphin. Fourth place went to strain "R", a.k.a. "Wellwisher",
and fifth place was earned by strain "V", a.k.a. "Remedy".

Medical Marijuana Evaluation
Awards Banquet • Dining & Dancing • Includes HEMP FASHION SHOW and plenty of independent vendors.
The Oregon Medical Cannabis Awards™,
or OMCA, brings together patients and caregivers to
evaluate the best strains of medical cannabis in the State of Oregon.
17 Entrants have submitted 25 samples of their cannabis strains and
our 28 Judges rate it for medical efficacy, potency, ease of production,
and other factors.
Since cannabis is not a standardized pharmaceutical
product and not available in commercial pharmacies, medical marijuana
patients face much difficulty in determining which strains of the plant,
which growing techniques, and which preparations will be best for treating
their medical condition. The Oregon Medical Cannabis Awards™provides
those patients with the information they need to make informed medical
marijuana decisions.
The Oregon Medical Cannabis Awards™ is the premiere annual event in the Oregon cannabis community. The public
is invited to the afternoon festivities celebrating the legal and
social victories in the areas of medical marijuana and industrial
hemp.
The awards also present an excellent
educational forum on medical marijuana with some of the country's
leading experts in the medical and legal fields. This years speakers
include Dr. Rick Bayer, MD, (the chief petitioner of Oregon's 1998
Medical Marijuana Initiative), Dr. Alan Cohn, MD, Dr. Tod Mikuriya,
MD, Dr. Grant Higginson, MD (the chief state officer in charge of the
Oregon Medical Marijuana Program for the Department of Human Services,
Ed Glick, RN, and attorneys at law Ann Witte, Phil Lebenbaum, Brian
Michaels, Lee Berger, and Paul Loney (Oregon NORML's legal director).
Topics of discussion include Harm
Reduction in Cannabis Therapy, a Cannabis & Mental Health Update, Cannabis & Impairment
(Myths
& Facts, Risks & Consequences), and Changes in the Oregon
Medical Marijuana Act (SB 1085).
Making Bubble Hash -
a presentation at this year's OMCA. Boardmember "Radical" Russ
Belville shows you how to make the most of your harvest by processing
your shake, stems, and leaves into Bubble Hash, using ice water, a mixing
drill, a couple of buckets, and five very special bags. (No actual marijuana
will be used in the demonstration.)
